How to Measure Helmet Size

Start by measuring your head size using a fabric tape measure. Wrap the tape measure around the largest part of your head, just above your eyebrows, and note the measurement in centimeters or inches. Recheck your measurement if there have been changes in your hairstyle or weight, or if you are switching brands, as sizes can vary. When choosing a helmet, budget options typically come in sizes from extra small to extra-large, each covering a range of dimensions. Higher-end helmets offer more precise sizing, often in one-centimeter increments, providing a more tailored fit.

Trying the Helmet On

Once you have your size, it's time to try on the helmet. Hold the chin straps and gently pull them apart as you slide the helmet over your head. If the helmet goes on too easily or feels too loose, it's too large. If it won’t go on at all, it’s too small. A snug fit is ideal, as the padding will mold to your head over time.

Checking the Fit

With the helmet on, the forehead padding should sit just above your eyebrows, with the helmet applying uniform, gentle pressure all around, touching the top of your head and pressing your cheeks slightly. Fasten the chin strap by threading the end through both D-rings, looping it back through the inner ring, and tightening. Alternatively, secure any buckle mechanisms. Ensure the strap is snug against your throat.

Testing the Fit

Stand in front of a mirror to check for gaps between the helmet and your temples, and ensure the back of the helmet doesn't push it forward over your eyes. Hold the helmet and gently rotate it left to right and front to back. The skin on your brow should move with the helmet. If it doesn't, the fit is too loose. The helmet should also squeeze your cheeks slightly without causing excessive pressure. If the pads don’t touch your skin or the helmet rocks from side to side, try different cheek pad inserts if available.

Retention Check

With the helmet on and the chin strap fastened, try to remove it by rolling it forward and backward. If you can remove it or if it exposes your forehead or blocks your vision, the helmet or straps are too loose. If the helmet stays in place and doesn’t roll too much, you have a proper fit. Remember to fit the helmet with a balaclava if you plan to wear one in competition.
